Rationale for a United Public Health Curriculum

The Rationale for a United Public Health Curriculum

In 2022, it was agreed that a new direction was required, it is timely, therefore, to re-evaluate the 5th Edition of the ASPHER Core Competences for the Public Health Professional published in 2018, and to move towards agreeing a Core Curriculum in Public Health for academic and vocational training programmes that supports the attainment of competency according to existing Competency Frameworks and Essential Public Health Operations (EPHOs).

ASPHER Executive Board Member, Prof. Mary B. Codd, Assoc. Prof of Public Health and Epidemiology at University College Dublin, shortly after her time leading the publication of the ASPHER led ECDC project, updating Core competencies in applied infectious disease epidemiology (UCCAIDE) (ECDC. 2022) is now spearheading this project and its new direction.

The ASPHER CCP envisions a core curriculum. This should allow for easier uptake, adaptability and ease of usability by ASPHER members across the European region. Afterall, ASPHER members require a core curriculum which has been developed with the changing public health landscape in mind (Conyard et al. 2022). Thus, it is timely to ascertain current expertise and current curricular elements actively being taught within ASPHER member institutions.
