What does the future of public health need to know about climate-health?

The climate crisis presents a significant public health concern. It's evident that climate change affects various aspects of health, including clean air, safe drinking water, food security, and the built environment. Public health systems play a crucial role in addressing these health impacts, but there is a need for a better understanding of the connection between climate change and public health. Climate change poses complex challenges for public health, and there is a lack of tools and knowledge among trainees and new graduates to develop effective responses.

The way forward: strengthening health equity through social justice-based approaches in public health education

While health disparities in marginalized groups are well-documented in public health research, integrating them into public health education is still a work in progress. Various strategies have emerged to bridge this gap in public health education, including Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, cultural competency programs, the use of intersectionality as an analytical framework, and a focus on decolonization through scholarly activism. These approaches have different theoretical foundations and address various aspects of action, but their common goal is to eliminate prejudiced practices and structures in public health institutions and advance health equity through social justice. However, implementing these approaches poses challenges for public health professionals and academic institutions.

Updated ECDC core competencies in applied infectious disease epidemiology: Processes, outcomes and opportunities for international academic collaboration

In 2008 the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published Core competencies for public health epidemiologists working in communicable disease surveillance and response. There followed Core competencies for infection control and hospital hygiene professionals (2013); Core competencies for vaccine-preventable diseases and immunisation (2017); and Core competencies on public health emergency preparedness (2017). The COVID-19 pandemic identified the need to Update ECDC Core Competencies in Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology (UCCAIDE) to capture developments in diagnostic methods, understanding transmission dynamics, genomic analysis, disease modelling and vaccinology.
